Sanathanan read towards his BFA and MFA in Painting at the University of Delhi and passed with First Class Honours. His work has been exhibited in several countries including the United Kingdom, France and India. In 2004, he was an Artist-in-Residence at Vasl in Karachi, Pakistan and the Usher Gallery in Lincoln, United Kingdom. His major publications include "Making the Impermanent Permanent: The Configurations of Mugamandhapa Architecture of Jaffna Temple" in Cintanai 15:1 (2005); "Painting the Artist’s Self: Location, Relocation and the Metamorphosis" at Tamil Nationalism – Trans/Formation (2004); "Interaction Between Visual Art and Tamil Literature in 20th Century" at Tamilini (2000), and "Contemporary Temple Painting of Jaffna" in Cintanai 12:2 (2000).
யாழ்ப்பாணப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் நுண்கலைத் துறையில் விரிவுரையாளராகப் பணியாற்றுகிறார் சனாதனன். டில்லி பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் ஓவியத் துறையில் முதுகலைப் பட்டத் தேர்வில் முதல் வகுப்பில் சித்தி பெற்றவர். இங்கிலாந்து, இலங்கை, பிரான்ஸ், இந்தியா ஆகிய நாடுகளில் இவரது ஓவியக் கண்காட்சிகள் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன. ஓவியம், கலை வரலாறு தொடர்பான அவரது பல ஆய்வுக் கட்டுரைகள் வெளியாகி இருக்கின்றன. அவருடைய ஓவியங்கள் http://shanaathanan.blogspot.com என்ற இணையத் தளத்தில் பார்க்கக் கிடைக்கிறது.
