More than two millennia of documentary evidences show several undercurrents in Tamil historiography: (a) classical ideas; (b) Colonialism, Nationalism and Orientalism; (c) the Dravidian Movement and (d) post colonial competition of linguistic, religious, caste and class identities. The legacies of all of them operate in varying degrees in determining the Tamil psyche today. The contemporary world witnesses redefinition of nationalism, emergence of culture-identities, need for a global outlook and above all, a globally spread Tamil population which is aware of its identity. This paper attempts to kindle a debate on the historiographical needs of changed realities.
தமிழர் வரலாற்றை எழுதுதல்: தேசியத்துக்கு அப்பால்
இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டு கால வரலாற்று, தொல்லியல் ஆவணங்கள் வரலாற்றியலில் பல முக்கிய
கட்டங்களைக் காட்டுகின்றன. முதலாவது, செµவியல் கருத்துகள். இரண்டாவது, காலனித்துவம்,
தேசியவாதம், கீழைத்தேசவாதம். மூன்றாவது, திராவிட இயக்கம். நான்காவது,
காலனித்துவத்துக்கு பிற்பாடு எழுந்த மொழியியல், மதவியல், சாதிய மற்றும் வர்க்க
அடையாளங்களுக்கிடையேயான போட்டி. இவை எல்லாவற்றினதும் எச்சசொச்சங்கள் பல்வேறு
தளத்திலும் தரத்திலும் தமிழ் மனோநிலையில் ஊடுருவி இருக்கின்றன. இப்போதைய உலகம்
தேசியவாதத்தை மீள்வரைவிலக்கணம் செய்துகொண்டுள்ளது. கூடவே பண்பாட்டு அடையாளங்கள்,
உலகளாவிய பார்வை, மற்றும் எல்லா இடங்களிலும் பரந்த ஒரு தமிழ்ச் சமூகம் என்பன உருவாகி
இருக்கின்றன. இத்தகைய மாறிவரும் சூழ்நிலையில் வரலாற்றை எழுதுவதில் உள்ள சவால்களை
இந்தக் கட்டுரை முன்வைக்கிறது.
Dr. Ragupathy currently handles teaching assignments in Archaeology,
Anthropology, Sociology, Tamil, and Art and Design at the University of Jaffna.
Formerly, he was Professor of South Asian Studies and Head of the Postgraduate
Departments at Utkal University of Culture in Orissa, India. His research
interests include South Asian History, Archaeology, Epigraphy, Culture,
Religions, Tamil Studies, and Astrology. Since 1973, he has authored, edited and
published 15 books and journals in English and Tamil, including Early
Settlements in Jaffna: An Archaeological Survey (1987) and
Inscriptions of Maldives (co-authored with Naseema Mohamed).
பொ.ரகுபதி யாழ்ப்பாணப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் தொல்லியல், மானுடவியல், சமூகவியல், தமிழ் போன்ற துறைகளில் கற்பித்து வருகிறார். இதற்கு முன்பு ஒரிசாவில் உள்ள உத்கல் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் தென்னாசியவியலில் பேராசிரியராகப் பணிபுரிந்தவர். அவரின் ஆய்வுத்துறைகள்: தென்னாசிய வரலாறு, தொல்லியல், கல்வெட்டியல், பண்பாட்டியல், தமிழியல், சோதிடம். ஆங்கிலத்திலும் தமிழிலும் 15 நுģல்கள் எழுதியுள்ளார். Early settlements in Jaffna என்ற ஆய்வு நுģல், தென்னாசியத் தொல்லியல் வரலாற்றில் ஒரு திருப்புமுனையை ஏற்படுத்தியது.
