Coping with Displacement: Ethics of Recognition
or the Will to Power

Sri Lankan Plantation Tamil youth have employed two modes of coping with displacement and the encounter with new "agents" of domination. The first may be described as the "ethics of recognition," with obvious allusions to Hegel's dialectic of recognition; and the second, with equally obvious allusion to Nietzsche's "will to power." The analysis of these two ways of coping with difference will be the subject of this paper.

Dr. Daniel is Professor of Anthropology and former Director of the Southern Asian Institute at Columbia University. His major publications are Charred Lullabies: Chapters in an Anthropography of Violence (1996) and Fluid Signs: Being a Person the Tamil Way (1987) . Other publications include "The Limits of Culture" in Near Ruins (1998); "Crushed Glass" in Culture/Contexture: Essays in Anthropology and Literary Study (1996); "Formations, Forms and Transformations of Tamil Refugees" in Mistrusting Refugees (1995), and "Suffering Nation and Alienation" in Questioning Otherness (1995). He is currently working on a book on the philosophy of the founder of American Pragmatism, Charles S. Pierce, and its relevance for the human sciences.
